BOOK A TATTOO

Why are there two kinds of tattoo machines, and how are they different? Coils vs Rotaries

You've probably seen two kinds of tattoo machines that artists use. There's the old-school coil machine that creates the telltale "tattoo sound" and has many visible moving parts to it, and a smaller sleeker style that is quiet and tube-shaped. The former is a coil machine, the latter a rotary pen. While both tools do the same job, there are some key differences between them.

Coil machines are the old-school workhorses of tattooing. They’re the ones that buzz loudly and look like little mechanical spiders made of springs and wires. Coil machines use electromagnetic coils to move the needle up and down, and that movement gives them a punchy, hard-hitting feel. Many artists love coils for lining because they hit the skin with authority, making it easier to pull crisp, bold lines. There’s also a lot of customization involved. Artists can tune their coils by adjusting the various components of the machine. For some, that hands-on tinkering is part of the fun. Many modern artists choose to use coils for their continuing benefits.
Rotary pens, on the other hand, are shaped like thick markers and run on a small motor that smoothly drives the needle. Compared to coils, rotaries are quieter, lighter, and vibrate way less. This makes them especially appealing for long sessions or detailed shading work where hand fatigue becomes a real issue. Many newer artists gravitate toward rotary pens because they’re basically plug-and-play.

For many tattoo artists, the convenience of a pen is appealing. While there are certain qualities of coils that they can't replicate, for most artists using them they get the job done just fine.

There are even hybrid machines, where you get all the components and functionality of a coil, except it's powered by a motor like a rotary!

Neither machine is “better.” Coil machines offer power and control for artists who love to fine-tune their setup and hit the skin a certain way. Rotary pens offer comfort and simplicity. At the end of the day, what's important is choosing the right tool for the job.
